Bitcoin block height is the position of a block in the chain. The latest block height is the live chain tip known by a synced Bitcoin Core node.
Confirmations are counted from block height. If a transaction is included in block 956,000 and the tip is 956,006, that transaction has seven confirmations including its own block.
